MSA's special focus program is Studio In The Elementary
School (SITES.)  While the SITES studio is located within the
school, the program operates independently to deliver
artist-designed and led arts activities and instruction.

Founded in 2005, SITES provides high quality, visual arts
programming for Marfa's elementary schoolchildren, Pre-K
through sixth grade.  Art projects at each grade level are
aligned with Texas curriculum guidelines known as "TEKS"
(Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) and are designed to
support the creative, intellectual and emotional development of
students.

Art activities and projects are developed and led by
professional artists from the community.  Through their
interaction with the SlTES teaching artists, as well as visiting
artists whose specific areas of expertise complement the core
curriculum, students learn to see art in a new way and to
appreciate the process of making art as well as gain the skills
necessary to successfully create projects of their own.

Each year, all SITES students have the opportunity to visit local
galleries and arts institutions including Ballroom Marfa, Ayn
Foundation, and the Judd and Chinati Foundations.  Exposure
to these world-renowned exhibitions and art collections
broadens the students' awareness of art, architecture, and
design and simultaneously introduces them to important art
resources located within the community of Marfa.

Through the SITES program, children discover and explore the
complexity of art-making in many forms and, most
importantly, experience the joy of making art.
